Description
1899 Check of J.H. Sherburne U.S. Licensed Trader in Browning, Montana. Joseph H. Sherburne (1850-1838) had long been involved in Indian trading first among the Ponca in Indian Territory and after 1895, had moved to Browning, Montana the agency headquarters for the Blackfoot. He also invested in real estate, banking, oil, telephone communications and railroad supply as well as opening stores at Babb and in Glacier National Park. The check signed by Sherburne has great Indian motif and two cent USS Maine documentary stamp. Check is for .00 to Dr. Z.T. Daniel who had been an Indian agency doctor both among the Blackfoot and the Oglala Sioux. It has then been endorsed to Walker Pharamcal in St. Louis, Missouri.
