Description

1950’s SS United States Ocean Liner
Troy Sunshade / Hobart Manufacturing Company
Folding Lounge Chair / Deck Chair - Mid-Century Modern Style
These folding lounge chairs were made as deck chairs for the SS United States ocean liner, launched in 1952. The ship, which soon achieved the record for the fastest Atlantic crossing, cost a staggering seventy-eight million dollars and was noteworthy for its extensive use of aluminum and its modern décor. The Troy Sunshade Company was an American firm that pioneered the manufacture of tubular steel furniture in the 1930s and then aluminum furniture in the postwar period. Hundreds of these chairs were made for the liner and remained with the ship until 1984, when the fittings and furniture were auctioned. The ship is now docked in Philadelphia awaiting refurbishment.
Has slot for name tag / label for those who would have reserved the chair aboard the ship.
Both chairs are bare aluminum and have wear and tear as well as in need of a good cleaning. The fabric cover may not be original. Some of the screws / fasteners have rust. These are likely screws used on the recovering and not original. Please see photos.
Dimensions Open: 34 3/4 x 24 5/8 x 61 7/8 in.
