Antique Burmese Mandalay Theatrical Male Figure. Wood Element. Myanmar, 19th C.
Burmese Mandalay Architectural or Theatrical Element. Folk Dance Figure.
    Description:
Old 19th century Burmese Mandalay theater element hand--carved from auspicious 'Yamanay' wood (Gmelina Aborea tree), depicting a standing theatrical figure 'Prince Mintha', a leading character in Burmese classical plays. He is dressed in traditional Mandalay attire, gorgeously modeled wearing a pair of billowing half-length trousers underneath his upper formal long sleeve costume, so he can perform acrobatic feats of gestures. He once held attributes that would have corresponded to his character.

The face is serene, hand painted with realistic flesh-like appearance, almond-shaped eyes, finely painted eyebrows, prominent nose, bow-shaped mouth with smiling red lips. Around his head is covered by a fashionable cloth wrap (gaung baung) while his stylized hair is done in a neat topknot. Anatomical aspects of the character are well modeled with nicely proportioned face, hands, limbs, and with torso postured in a unique display of motion.

The figure is beautifully carved from a single block of wood, with the arms attached by small nails (typical early Burmese style), hand-painted in heavy re-applied layers of enamel paints, vividly accented in brilliant colors, and decorated with metal flanges fastened at the shoulders with small finishing nails, and a large lotus flower at the reverse. This carving was once part of an architectural or theater element indicated by the existing notch at the reverse along with pilot holes where nails pierce the wood.
Remarks: Excellent condition, unaltered, unrepaired, without cracks or splits, preserved by re-applied layers of enamel paint from time to time, with the wood having normal chips, dents, and minor paint loss, due to the many years of exposure to the weather and other deteriorating conditions.
