Antique Wood-Carved Burmese Female Shaman - Architectural Temple Element. Myanmar, 19th C.
    Description:
A beautiful 19th century Mandalay Period Architectural Temple Element of a Female Shaman, carved of auspicious Teak wood, she is depicted standing on a square plinth, with arms stretched, presenting a ritual offering to the Sky Spirit or Grandfather Spirit, by holding a ceremonial vessel high above her head with both hands. She is elegantly dressed in a long flowing Sarong of floral design, secured by a decorative belt about her waist, draped in decorative layers of foliated plates, ornate sashes, and flanked by wing-like flanges extending beyond the back of her garment. The hand-carved features of her face appear realistic and vivid, portraying a benevolent nature, highly detailed with emotion and a smiling expression, almond-shaped eyes open, broad nose, and bow-shaped lips. She wears a tall Burmese style headdress, fashioned with her long hair pulled back in a pony-tail, and garthered by a knot.

In Burmese culture, prior to the advent of Buddhism, Burmese were animists, who worshipped a series of natural spirits called 'Nats'. The Nat's as spirits of natural forces, such as water, wind, stones, and trees, take many guises. They are helping spirits, energies of the invisible world, all ghost who are guardians of the state and royal family, and grantors of dynastic continuity. Burmese reguard Nat worship as a method of dealing with or solving the problems of this life.

In each traditional village, there is a sacred groove at the top of the village, where the sky spirit is propitiated with offerings. Ceremonies are held, paying respect to the Nat spirits, with concerns of avoiding harm from Nats who died prematurely and thus considered to be angry, and or jealous. Such ritual ceremonies are officiated by Spirit Mediums, Shaman's who combine music, dance, and trances to communicate with the spirit world, praying for guidence, well being, and good fortune. Shamans recognize that all things throughout the cosmos are connected as a whole, especially with nature, and provide mediation between both worlds or both sides -
"Oh joyful Guardian Spirit, may you show us with your blessings, the blessings of Nature and the Divine."
