Antique Burmese Wood-carved Holy Man 'Shaman' Figure. Myanmar, 19th Century.
Burmese Shamanism - 'Master of Spirits', a Shaman or healer mediates relationships between daily life and the spirit world, they are able to utilize ancient ritual and passed down techniques to combat evil spirits, by communicating with the spirit world while in a trance.
    Description:
Old 19th century Burmese teakwood carved auspicious figure of a holy man, probably a Shaman or Medicine Man of sorts, depicted standing in a frontal posture on a small round plinth, grasping a walking cane with the right hand, whilst the left hand, with open-palm, holds a 'philosepher's stone', a medicinal amulet used to oppress evil forces and induce well being.

He wears a long flowing robe, of traditional monk style in the Open mode, worn diagonnally over the left shoulder, covering both arms, with a broad end fold draped to his mid-section.
    xxx
His face is serene, hand-painted, with realistic flesh-like appearance, almond-shaped eyes, heavy eyebrows, prominent nose, and bow-shaped mouth with red lips smiling. His head is covered by a fashionable cloth woven hat.
    xxx
The figure is beautifully carved from a single block of wood, with the arms attached by small nails (typical early Burmese style), hand-painted in heavy re-applied layers of lacquer paints, vividly accented. The base bears an inscription written in temple monks scripture using white enamel paint.
Remarks: Excellent condition, unaltered, unrepaired, without cracks or splits, preserved by re-applied layers of lacquer paint from time to time, with the wood having normal chips, dents, and minor paint loss, due to the many years of exposure to the weather and other deteriorating conditions.
