You are buying an antique mangle board, handmade and used by Ukrainian farmers in the 1800s-1900s. This old household tool was hand-carved from one solid piece of wood, making it quite heavy and measuring approximately 28.3" x 5.1" x 1.8" (72 x 13 x 4.5 cm). It has a terrific, old, unrestored patina. One side is smooth, while the other has carved ridges that show age and wear from use.
In the 19th century, mangle boards were typically used in combination with wooden rods to smooth wrinkles out of fabrics and to beat down woven fabric into a linen-like texture. They were also used for scrubbing clothes clean. This particular mangle board features a carved handle, rich coloring, and beautiful wood graining.
