Bordallo Pinheiro Portuguese Majolica ceramic / pottery cheese plate, yellow and green, w/ 2 mice handles, 12.75" diameter.Very cute ceramic pottery plate with a woven texture and "Majolica" (straw-yellow) and grass-green glaze. Two little grey mice circle the edges of the plate, perched atop the angled-up portions of the edge, and serve as carrying handles. The plate has a raised lip on the bottom so that it sits level and slightly raised off the table. It is in excellent condition with no chips or scratches. Very unusual design and rarely seen. Purchased in Portugal. Stamped on bottom: Bordallo Pinheiro Caldas da Rainha Made in Portugal and includes the Bordallo Pinheiro frog logo. Made by the famous Bordallo Pinheiro pottery factory in Portugal. Bordallo Pinheiro takes its name from the famous artist Rafael Bordallo Pinheiro (1846-1905). His most widely known designs include cabbages and other vegetables, fruits, shellfish, animals and florals. Pinheiro potteries was established in Caldas da Rainha (meaning "The Queen's Bath"), a small spa town sixty miles north of Lisbon, that traces its pottery tradition and high quality back to ancient times.
