    Description

Burmese Ava Period Carved, Lacquered and Giltwood Buddha, Late 18th Century and 19th
A sublime, rare and inusual late 18th century Burmese Ava period carved, lacquered and gilt Buddha.
    A 18th century's buddha hiden under a 19th century's buddha !
The historical Buddha, Shakyamuni, is portrayed in bhumisparsha mudra, the gesture of calling the Earth to witness, commemorating the moment the Buddha reached enlightenment. The Buddha is dressed in patchwork robes and a patchwork mantle, decorated in the raised thayo lacquer technique, and richly gilt. His heart shaped face, typical of the Ava Period, is framed by long earlobes and a head of tightly curled hair covering the pronounced ushnisha. He gazes serenely downward, head tilted ever so slightly to one side, a knowing smile playing upon his lips.
