Mr. Lothrop attended
Cape Elizabeth High School upon graduating he attended
Bowdoin College in Brunswick ME
where he was
a member of Alpha Delta Phi fraternity.
He went onto earn his master?s degree at Columbia University.
He spent a year studying geology at the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology.
Upon graduation he took on a teaching fellow position at Bowdoin College where he spent two years teaching biology. His next teaching assignment was at Collegiate School in New York City, a career that lasted for 41 years.
Mr. Lothrop's enthusiasm for photography began in the early 1960?s, he was an avid camera enthusiast and had a true passion for the history of photography.
He started the world?s first periodical ?Photographic Collectors Newsletter? in 1968 and continued until 1975. He spent 18 years as a contributing editor of Popular Photography where he wrote the ?Time Exposure? column.
With a passion for learning and sharing his knowledge about photography
Mr. Lothrop went on to write many books, among them were, A Century of Cameras in 1973, De Deheimkameras (The Secret Cameras) in 1978, Cyclone and Related Cameras in 1994 and The History of Photography as Seen Through the Spira Collection in 2001. As well as the co-authoring the ?Photographic Advertising from A-Z? in 1977.
He was a member of New York?s Photographic Historical Society and served as director, as well as president of the ?Photographic Historical Society of America?
He had an intense interest in box cameras, amateur cameras, and single use cameras.
