Description
James Earl Ray (1928-1998) Assassin of Martin Luther King whom he killed in Memphis in 1968. On June 11, 1980, James Earl Ray sent his wife, Anna Sandhu Ray, this love letter from Tennessee State Penitentiary. (Anna sketched Ray during his trail for a prison escape attempt and married Ray from prison in 1978). Ray writes, "...this morning I received all the paint supplies, brown pen, mixing bottles, paints....I'll start on some paintings again....try to have someone get you an appointment with Schuggs- it won't be too much longer before we give the state the choice of how I am leaving here." James signs at the bottom in black ink, some creases and spots of soiling on the card. Acquired from Historical Auction documented in pictures.
