    Description

Philadelphia was well-known for hosting many Broadway shows during their tryout periods in the 50s, 60s, and 70s, and this is a rare program of the pre-Broadway preview of the play SUBWAYS ARE FOR SLEEPING Sydney Chapin and Carol Lawrence. Prior to its Broadway opening, SUBWAYS ARE FOR SLEEPING played at the Shubert Theatre in Philadelphia where the writers "tried out the show" and made changes based on audience response.
The program is in good condition for a sixty-year-old booklet. The staple binding is in tact; however, it's missing the top staple because it was never there in the first place--probably a an oversite when the original binding was done. The date "November 22, 1961" is written on the top of the cover in light pencil. (Personally, I think ephemera that has scribbles and doodling and coffee stains are more charming than pieces in pristine condition as they retain part of their former lives with their former owners.) The program also contains an insert with some replacement cast members.
If you collect Playbills, you'll want to add this to your collection.
