Description
NORMANDIE BURNING original 1942 Castle Film 8mm newsreel French Line ship New York disaster… This is an original 1942 black and white standard 8mm newsreel from
Castle
Films of the burning and capsizing of SS Normandie at the French Line
Pier 88 in Manhattan.
The film runs several minutes, I am not sure of the exact time (maybe 4
minutes) as I have
only run it through a hand cranked film viewer.
I have included some
still frames from the film that I found on the internet.
There are a number
of explanatory titles throughout the film which starts
with the ship being
escorted up the Hudson River at the end of its
triumphant maiden voyage.
Film then moves ahead to 1942 and shows armed guards on the dock and
ship deck after Normandie was taken over by the US to be converted for
trooping duties. Film then shows the fire beginning and the evacuation of
workers down a ladder at the bow. Lots of smoke from the ship and
worried looking fire marshals on the dockside. Views of traffic on the
highway watching the efforts to put out the fire as fireboats pump water
and the ship starts listing over to the port side.
Film ends up showing the fully capsized vessel with small boats, foam
and debris floating around in the water… At the end of the Normandie
part there is a short, couple of minute, piece of war time news from Brasil
that has been spliced on at the end. The metal film canister measures 5
inches in diameter.
NOTE
- I have no idea how to price this as they never come up for sale so
I am basing the price on the range of prices for other Normandie collectibles
sold on eBay and I invite any and all offers.
