    Characters Poster 1998
    Along with the Simpson Family,
    T
    he Simpsons
includes a large array of characters: co-workers, teachers, family friends, extended relatives, townspeople, local celebrities, as well as fictional characters within the show. The creators originally intended many of these characters as one-time jokesters or for fulfilling needed functions in the town. A number of them have gained expanded roles and subsequently starred in their own episodes. According to creator Matt Groening,
the show adopted the concept of a large supporting cast from the Canadian sketch comedy show
    Second City Television.
Some of the characters have since been retired:
Following Phil Hartman's death in 1998, the characters he voiced (
    T
    roy McClure
    and
    L
    ionel Hutz
    ) were retired;
    Marcia
    Wallace's character of Edna
    K
    rabappel
was retired as well after her death in 2013.
The show was controversial from its beginning debut in 1989 and has made the news several times. In the early seasons, some parents characterized Bart as a poor role model for children and several United States public schools even banned
    The Simpsons
    merchandise and T-shirts. In January 1992, then-President George H. W. Bush
made a speech during his re-election campaign in which he said: "We are going to keep on trying to strengthen the American family, to make American families a lot more like
    the
    Waltons
and a lot less like the Simpsons."
